Hey guys, .mobi will be coming to us very soon. I heard that it is backed by major mobile phone manufacturers and operators, plus Microsoft and GSM Association. If I am not wrong, the price for .mobi domain is about the same as existing domains - around $10 per year.
So what do you guys think?? Would be it hot?? Shall we start to aim fo it??

I hate TLDs period. I really think this antiquated naming system needs to be blown up for a more practical one. We don't need third level domains and we don't need continuous domain names. It is time for a new standard where a business can have two words as their domain name and no tld.
These new tlds only make things worse not better.

Well, with the back-up from major mobile companies, I think .mobi could be going strong. Just to update, .mobi is going for public registration starting 26/09/06 . Till then they are open for sunrise registration for those trademark and copyright owners. Detail at :-

I have tried to register for some generic one word names, but they have been registered by others. So, Good Luck.:p

I see .mobi and think "Thar She Blows!". or "They Call Me Ishmael." As I mentioned above, we need a new system beyond tlds. TLDs just don't work as they are too confusing and the average visitor can't determine when a tld might be appropriate.

Is the .mobi indicative of sites optimized for mobile devices, or is it just new for the sake of being new?

I agree and the fact that they have backing from "major" companies isn't all that impressive any more...think Enron.

Hmmm, well that's worthy of trying, but I don't see much use for it on personal level, maybe once it spreads.

Is there always a little hype when new stuff like this is released? Or is it just because of the backing?

Hmm I remember a story about the possible .xxx extension and forcing pornographic websites to be secluded to the 3x extension...not sure if it will ever pass, but it be interesting to have that kind of filter.
