Porn site dots

I read that there's a bill in the Senate which would require any site containing porn to change it's .com to a specific . which would denote it as containing unsuitable material for children. One, do you think it would work? Two, don't you suspect there would be umpteen ways of getting around the law?

From what I remember .xxx was supposed to be passed by ICANN, but the United States Government (illegally) pressuerd ICANN to remove the domain.

No wonder!! I was trying to search for .xxx related info and just couldn't find any registrars that offer this TLD registration service! I was thinking that it might be going for next "hot" trend for porn related industry, and was ready to snap some names under this TLD.

Now my plan is gone...

Just hang on, it wouldn't surprise me if the idea resurfaced! Surprises me that the U.S. applied pressure about not using xxx ...are the fundies losing out these days?

Yeah I have heard the .xxx be on again and off again. No real motivation for sites to move off. They would have to force the .com registrars to remove any porn sites from them to make it work.

That's a task I wouldn't want to have to work on as a project! Can you imagine how difficult it would be to first define porn, and then make a transition? Pretty hopeless really or so it would seem.

It would be nice if they could come up with something. I get tired of accidently ending up on the sites.

I liked the idea when it popped up, but I agree that doing the change from one to the other and monitoring the web itself would be close to impossible...

No, the fundies didn't like the notion of making a virtual rd light district. Tagging porn sites by domain extension would actually make them easier to find.

The adult industry didn't care for the idea, either. As I mentioned in another thread, for once the adult industry and the Bush adminsitration saw eye to eye.

The federal government has already done that. 18 USC 2257 is one regulation that contains definitions regarding pornography. With the recent amendments to 2257, which has to do with proof of age for models in adult content, the governemnt is already monitoring adult sites for compliance with regulations. So the mechanism would already be in place.
