Why buy? |

I've been building sites and developing domains for several years now. I have never been able to comprehend why one would BUY a domain name from a list of already registered names when they can just as easily make up a new name. Unless the name you really want is already registered and a up for sale, and you really want it that bad, then it would make sense to buy your own new name. At least this is the way things are in my mind. Maybe someone can explain to me a different way of thinking.

The return of vinyl records...What does it mean for the Internet? |

I'm watching a TV news report right now about how the vinyl record is making it's return. Some new bands are releasing albums on 12" vinyl and LP singles. They also mentionned that classic bands like Led Zepplin are making new releases on vinyl of their old classics. If the audio world is moving backwards, what does that mean for communications and the Internet? Maybe we will all be talking on corded dial phones (in black only, of course) in a few years from now and our computers will be collecting dust in the attic!!

Why the Variation in domain suffix prices? |

I was wondering to myself about the variation in domain suffix prices. I understand that in the beginning everyone wanted the status of the .com suffix and so it became valuable. I understand that not many people want .info because it can look a little lame at times and so it's less expensive. What I don't understand is why from host to host the prices for the same suffixes vary so much. It is not like you are buying different makes or models of cars that will depreciate or appreciate differently. Maybe it's partly because different hosts give various levels of services. Still, there must be another reason, because this doesn't seem like enough. Anyone have some ideas?

A few weeks ago I registered a domain name I didn't start developing and I didn't officially park. I was thinking I was going to start developing it and then the holidays happened and somehow I forgot all about it. Today the customer service rep from 4goodhosting calls me to let me know my hosting package was going to expire. Wow, that seemed really personalized and kind of neat that they would call instead of just sending an email. That gives 4goodhosting.com a few brownie points in my book.

The ultimate YAWN. |

There is nothing more boring to me than a parked domain. Rather than spending my time setting up an email with a link that will go to hundreds of Paid fo action readers, then keeping track of the traffic etc, am I not more productive to go ahead and start developing my domain instead of keeping it parked? Keep in mind there are always lots of ways to make a domain look complete without having to put a lame little "person working" sign or "under construction". I prefer to develop my domain as I go along, having it up and functioning, with no construction signs. Where necessary I might put some comment as to the further development that may arrive in certain areas of the site. Arouse a little interest, get people to start talking. Develop...Don't Park.

PPC searches and PTR - Worth the trouble? |

I am just wondering what is the real value of PPC search engines. There are thousands of them out there. They flood the PTR programs with advertising in hope that while you're watching their site for 15 seconds, you'll click on some of their items. The problem is, it just becomes rote behavior for the readers. They are earning maybe 10 cents in a minute if they can handle enough multiple windows. That's a pretty big estimate, too, the way I see it. and that only comes to $6/hr which isn't even minimum wage. And no one is going to do PTR for 8 hours. After while, who is going to click a result in every search they receive by e-mail. Someone had the idea that this would be a unique way to earn a few cents and boost traffic. Now the market is flooded with PPC SE owners just praying they can get enough clicks to buy a cup of coffee. Besides, when I am really searching for something, I'm going to go to one of the major search engines right? The few times I have tried to patronize the smaller ones, I end up re-searching on the bigger guys anyway.

I was just wondering if anyone has run across a client that wants their pet to have his own domain and website. I know alot of people gave their pet's hotmail addresses and posted them on websites where people could look at their pets, admire them, and write email to their hotmail. Most likely they did this on free pages like Fortune City or freewebs. Anyone have clients that take spoiling Jr. to this extreme? http://www.yourpetsveryowndomain.WUT??
