The recycled paper might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about construction materials, but it works fine and dandy for countertops. Once set in a nonpetroleum, formaldehyde-free resin base, the post-consumer paper is both heat- and stain-resistant. And, because it paper, color choices roam far and wide.
Recycled aluminum is a good choice for folks who prefer a more contemporary aesthetic. Not only are the products made from 50 to 90 percent recycled aluminum, they are also recyclable at the end of their useful lives. The clear-coat finish on the countertops is non-toxic and, thereby, safe for food.
Sustainable wood is the best option if you really must have wood. The best bet is to use reclaimed or recycled wood products. That way new-growth trees don need to be cut down. Additionally, old-growth wood generally has a tighter grain making it a higher quality. Shy of going that route, trees that have been sustainably harvesting are the way to go.
With the exceptions of glass and metal, all of the products that we toss in the recycling bin each week actually get downcycled because the quality of the materials diminishes with each cycle. Paper can be downcycled six or seven times before the fibers are worn out and plastic bottles can be re-made into fleece, but, after that, they become waste.
The goal with all of these countertop products is to up-cycle the materials, meaning to make them more useful and valuable than they were in their original state. Glass, if the colors are separated, can be recycled into new products an infinite number of times without losing any quality. Likewise, cans and such can be re-made into more cans or other metal products.
So, if you need new countertops, consider joining the cradle-to-cradle movement by going with one of these wonderfully eco-friendly products. Your planet will thank you.
