Do you think that captchas work to increase signup? Someone told me that we should use fun loving and pleasant captcha to our website so that users can take interest into registration to our website. Please let me know if you can help me with this.

I don't think that is the very essence of putting captcha in your site. Captcha is used to protect online submission forms from spam bots and other auto-posting programs.
