A US online petition website has generated enough web traffic to reignite interest in passing government legislation - which had previously been written off as "dead", it has emerged.
According to AJC.com, a bill that was set to appear before the US Senate and House of Representatives - but had "appeared all but dead less than two weeks ago" - has seen 30,000 extra signatures thanks to its posting on a generically named domain.
The website reports that Georgia residents logged on to PetitionOnline.com to register their backing for the end of alcohol prohibition for Sunday sales and this has led to "improved" chances of the bill being given the go ahead by the US government.
Commenting on the news, US senator Seth Harp - a sponsor of the bill to allow Sunday store sales of alcohol - said: "We're off and running."
It is reported that the "situation has changed" due to the vast number of signatures generated over the past few weeks and that the easy-to-find petition "gained steam" leading to "new interest in the bill".
PetitionOnline.com offers free online hosting of public petitions and claims to have so far seen over 63 million signatures collected across its active petitions which are accessible 24 hours a day.
