I've been building sites and developing domains for several years now. I have never been able to comprehend why one would BUY a domain name from a list of already registered names when they can just as easily make up a new name. Unless the name you really want is already registered and a up for sale, and you really want it that bad, then it would make sense to buy your own new name. At least this is the way things are in my mind. Maybe someone can explain to me a different way of thinking.

You actually answered your own question. It's just a matter of perspective.
I've seen people try to buy first before looking for other available names. I
also found those who do the other way around.
It boils down to their intent, and how far they're willing to go.

I've known of people, rather business, that found that their name was already registered as a domain, precisely because someone else thought of it before! So, that is where the big profits start! It is like someone registering macys.com way before the store had even thought of having a website... and that is THEIR NAME and the name that people is going to type while looking for them... so, you assume they want it very badly and are willing to pay big bucks for it!! But for people that are only starting a business, then maybe another name could work as well...

Domainer,
My thoughts exactly when I first started domaining. Then it started, the addiction of owning certain domains. Doesn't matter how disciplined you are it will happen. You will buy generic brand food so as to build your coveted domain portfolio.
You might get divorced over it, but build your portfolio you must.
Then too think about this, what if you see a name for sale and the owner has it parked somewhere that has a poor pay per click program, such as Afternic. Many of the domains parked at places that do not have a good parking program will not make you money because the parking pages do not display the right ads that are revelent to your domain name.
So let me give you some very profitable advice.
If you see a domain name for sale that is parked at a looser type place, try to buy it. The owner is not getting any money or very little as it is parked at the wrong place. Buy the domain and then place it in Sedo or Fabulous and watch you investment grow!
I bought a name a few months ago on Ebay for $8.30. The guy had it parked wrong. The name? etexaspoker.com
Yesterday in one click I made $9.30. This week alone I have had three clicks. That is a very good name and by registering my own name I would not have made any money more than likely as most names you register can only be sold as brandable. Names that have direct type in traffic, such as etexaspoker are money makers!
How much is that domain worth? You tell me, but I scored getting it and I do that every week. I buy names everywhere. I do register most names myself and only buy about one percent of the names I own, But the ones I do buy I see the name in a different light then the owner, so I am able to quickly turn it into profit.
If you have lots of money you can do the same with names that are getting red hot. Names like top keyword .mobi are still cheap because the market is just defining the value.
A few weeks ago I might have sold my paymoney.mobi for a small amount. Then a couple days ago a guy announced he sold sportsbook.mobi for $129,000!. He had registered the domain in Oct. of this year for under $30.00.
So what I am saying is when certain markets get hot, jump in. The term is flipping and real estate agents do it all the time.
So yes there is big money in keeping a eye out for domain bargains. I bet you too some day will get addicted to domain buying.
Some names I want to watch now as the market is heating up are for sale by me in Ebay check out the auction,
Just type in any Ebay serach bar the domain and you will see my auction.

If I want a domain that is on for sale and I have the money to pay for it, then I would definately get it. So it all depends on how bad you want it and how much you are willing to pay.

I bought a .net domain but I really really want the .com one. I'm hoping the owner of the .com would just let it expire or at least sell it cheaply to me. If it's too expensive, he can keep it.
It really really depends on how much you really like it.

Well it depends on how much you want that domain, if you really want it bad you will go and buy it for some serious bucks. Well not always you can register another domain, if you really want the already registered one.

I hope that you get what you want. I know some owners refused to give up their com one because of the traffic they generate and they are making money off of it too.

Well if they are making good money from the domain, they will surely not sell it, as that would either make them to ask a huge amount of money or just refuse if they are making that much money.
