Impact of AI on Data Centers and the Environment: Challenges and Opportunities
#1
Generative AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, utilize natural language processing technology to comprehend conversational prompts, effectively reducing the user adoption barrier. As a result, ChatGPT quickly became a viral hit, with over 100 million users in just two months.
This fast increase has been used as the catalyst for public-facing AI initiatives. Since ChatGPT's inception, other software titans, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, have created their large language model chatbots, attracting even more users worldwide. These technologies consume a lot of electricity, which raises worries about AI's environmental effect and overall energy use in data centers.
Let's explore the environmental impact of the AI boom, focusing on energy usage, real-world effects, and strategies for data centers to manage AI workloads while reducing climate impact.
How does AI use so much power within the data center?
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers and transmission networks account for 1% and 1.5% of worldwide power consumption and 1% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Energy demand puts pressure on electrical systems in many areas, and the accompanying emissions have a variety of negative environmental consequences.
According to an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) analysis issued in May 2024, massive data centers consumed more than quadruple the amount of power between 2017 and 2021 before the AI surge. Commercially available digital services, such as video streaming and communication software, contributed significantly to this increase. The rise of AI is now driving up data center load increases.
AI workloads use more energy than traditional digital technologies. For example, the EPRI analysis indicated that standard Google inquiries consume about 0.3 watt-hours, whereas ChatGPT requests consume approximately 2.9 watt-hours each. That's roughly tenfold the amount of electricity consumed. GenAI models that generate pictures, music, and movies need much more power at every request.
To put this into context, developers are presently constructing new data centers with capabilities of up to 1,000 megawatts, enough to power 800,000 houses, according to EPRI.
EPRI found three major contributors to the high energy consumption of AI workloads: -
1.    Model training: AI models must be created and fine-tuned before training. EPRI says this procedure accounts for around 10% of their overall energy footprint.
2.    Model Development: To train a model, an AI algorithm has to handle a significant quantity of data. According to EPRI, this process needs "substantial computation efforts and high energy expenditure for extended periods," accounting for around 30% of the total energy footprint.
3.   Utilization: Deploying and utilizing an entirely constructed and trained AI model in real-world applications necessitates extensive calculations, which, according to EPRI, account for around 60% of its energy footprint.
Examples of AI's impact on the environment
The IEA developed the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, which outlines a route for a worldwide transition to renewable energy that would limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the IPCC, these threats include more frequent extreme weather events, the extinction of specific ecosystems, extreme heat waves, and more powerful tropical cyclones. A rise in severe weather will result in catastrophic droughts, increased flood threats, and water and resource availability effects.

1.   Increase in carbon emissions
Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that training a big AI model might produce about 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent. According to the university's studies, this is more than five times what an automobile emits during life.
2.   Use of non-renewable resources
According to a United Nations Environment Programmed study, key minerals and rare earth elements are needed to manufacture the microchips that fuel AI. These minerals are theoretically limited, difficult to recycle, and frequently extracted in ecologically damaging methods. The electronic garbage they generate may also include harmful elements.
3.   Increase in water usage
Data centers use water to liquid-cool the technology that powers AI applications. According to a Yale Environment 360 article, a user who uses ChatGPT ten to fifty times causes a data center to consume half a liter of water. ChatGPT has millions of users; thus, the total water use might be hundreds of millions of gallons, merely used to cool the AI-powered equipment.

EPRI guidelines to mitigate AI’s negative impact

EPRI recommends a few areas for data centers to focus on to reduce escalating energy use, retain load levels at the lower end of expected growth rate scenarios, and minimize the environmental implications of AI workloads.
·      Operational efficiency and flexibility
A comprehensive approach is required to address growing energy demand while limiting emissions rise. Strategies include investing in more energy-efficient processors and server architectures, leveraging virtualization to improve resource flexibility, implementing more effective cooling technologies, and utilizing continuous monitoring and analytics to ensure optimal operational efficiency and adaptability.
·      Collaboration through a shared economy model
Electric utilities must manage resources between conventional consumers and data centers despite increasing and unexpected load increases. To help address this issue, data centers can work more closely with power utilities to build a shared energy economy. For example, electric utilities can use data center backup generators as a grid-dependability resource, resulting in a more symbiotic partnership.
·      Load growth forecasting and modelling
Data centers and power utilities may collaborate more effectively to anticipate interconnection demands using more precise forecasting and modeling tools. This can assist energy providers in assessing the total power usage for data centers over time. This allows them to avoid impacting the electrical grid while providing flexibility in operating bandwidth and resource management.
·      Upgrades to the data center
Managers should consider using more flexible computing methodologies and efficient server administration technologies to meet the growing need for AI in data centers. Modern computing hardware, such as tensor processing units, field-programmable gate arrays, and GPUs, is critical.
