How does AI use so much power within the data center?
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers and transmission networks account for 1% and 1.5% of worldwide power consumption and 1% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. According to an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) analysis issued in May 2024, massive data centers consumed more than quadruple the amount of power between 2017 and 2021 before the AI surge. AI workloads use more energy than traditional digital technologies. To put this into context, developers are presently constructing new data centers with capabilities of up to 1,000 megawatts, enough to power 800,000 houses, according to EPRI.
EPRI found three major contributors to the high energy consumption of AI workloads: -
1.    Model training: AI models must be created and fine-tuned before training. EPRI says this procedure accounts for around 10% of their overall energy footprint.
2.    Model Development: To train a model, an AI algorithm has to handle a significant quantity of data. According to EPRI, this process needs "substantial computation efforts and high energy expenditure for extended periods," accounting for around 30% of the total energy footprint.
3.   Utilization: Deploying and utilizing an entirely constructed and trained AI model in real-world applications necessitates extensive calculations, which, according to EPRI, account for around 60% of its energy footprint.
 
EPRI guidelines to mitigate AI’s negative impact
 
EPRI recommends a few areas for data centers to focus on to reduce escalating energy use, retain load levels at the lower end of expected growth rate scenarios, and minimize the environmental implications of AI workloads.
·      Operational efficiency and flexibility
A comprehensive approach is required to address growing energy demand while limiting emissions rise. Strategies include investing in more energy-efficient processors and server architectures, leveraging virtualization to improve resource flexibility, implementing more effective cooling technologies, and utilizing continuous monitoring and analytics to ensure optimal operational efficiency and adaptability.
·      Collaboration through a shared economy model
Electric utilities must manage resources between conventional consumers and data centers despite increasing and unexpected load increases. To help address this issue, data centers can work more closely with power utilities to build a shared energy economy. Data centers and power utilities may collaborate more effectively to anticipate interconnection demands using more precise forecasting and modeling tools. ·      Upgrades to the data center
Managers should consider using more flexible computing methodologies and efficient server administration technologies to meet the growing need for AI in data centers. Modern computing hardware, such as tensor processing units, field-programmable gate arrays, and GPUs, is critical.
