I start with (1). Directory submission.

2. organic links. get quality content that natural attracts links. Viral tools are a great example. A flash animation that people forward to their friends, etc. This is the best way to get links by far, but takes the most effort.

Try to submit your site in DMOZ so you get more links over there.

I have not had much success with DMOZ. Has anyone here used it extensively?

It takes a long time to get into DMoZ. You have to wait it out.
