I mostly scan when reading also. It the ad is in the middle of the article I skip over it and never g back to look at it. Same if it is at the top of the page. I never look there.

I myself have to concur with the people who prefer adverts down along the sides, rather than in the body of the text. The point is to be as unobstrusive as possible...have a commercial that, at first glance, seems like it could be an extension of the general design of the page. Having my focus interrupted by adverts turns me off to the website in general, especially with respect to pop-ups. I've been known to stop reading websites I quite liked because of popups and other annoying forms of advertising.
